The one-line request that produces incomparable quotes
“Please quote 4 mm plastic corrugated produce boxes” leaves nearly every cost and performance driver open. Two suppliers can both quote 4 mm while using different grammage, flute geometry, recycled content, seams, handles, closures, treatments and packing density. Normalize the specification before comparing prices.
Copy this RFQ table
| Field | Buyer input | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Crop and application | [commodity, variety, field/packhouse/export/retail use] | Product shape, moisture, cooling and abrasion differ. |
| Load | [net product kg] + [ice/coolant kg] = [maximum gross kg] | Controls handles, bottom, joints and stacking requirement. |
| Internal dimensions | [L × W × H, mm] and measurement method | Protects usable volume and product fit. |
| Maximum external dimensions | [L × W × H, mm] | Controls pallet, container, conveyor and shelf fit. |
| Sheet construction | [nominal thickness, gsm, tolerances, flute/profile] | Thickness and mass per area are not interchangeable performance guarantees. |
| Flute direction | [vertical/horizontal by each wall; mark on drawing] | Changes stiffness, fold behavior, compression and drainage path. |
| Polymer and additives | [virgin/recycled rule, color, UV, antistatic or other requirement] | Affects compliance, durability, appearance, processing and recyclability. |
| Food-contact requirement | [destination rule, food type and conditions of use] | A resin name alone does not prove the finished article is suitable. |
| Construction | [one-piece/two-piece, welded/riveted/stapled joint, base, lid, closure] | Joint and closure often govern wet handling and reuse. |
| Handles | [size, position, reinforcement and maximum hand load] | Poor placement can tear the panel or create ergonomic risk. |
| Ventilation | [hole/slot size, count, position and target open area] | Airflow must be balanced against wall strength and product containment. |
| Drainage | [drain size, count, edge clearance and required drain time] | Controls meltwater release without sacrificing the bottom or losing product. |
| Print and marking | [colors, sides, process, artwork revision, barcode/lot-marking requirement] | Controls plate/tooling, adhesion, scuff resistance and traceability. |
| Pack-out | [flat/assembled/nested; units per bundle/pallet] | Drives freight cube, labor and receiving space. |
| Pallet plan | [pallet size, boxes/layer, layers, maximum height/weight, wrap] | A strong single box can still fail in a poor pallet pattern. |
| Route environment | [temperature, humidity, hydrocooling/top ice, transit days, handling] | The acceptance test must represent the actual hazards. |
| Reuse model | [one-way/closed loop; cleaning; target trips; loss and rejection rules] | Determines material, joints, marking and cost-per-trip assumptions. |
| Quality release | [dimensions, mass, construction, print and performance tests; sampling] | Makes the approved sample repeatable in production. |
Internal, external and usable dimensions are different
Internal dimensions define nominal product space. External dimensions determine pallet, container, conveyor and rack compatibility. Usable dimensions may be smaller than the nominal inside size because of folded corners, locks, tabs or inward-projecting joints. State all three when fit is critical, and define whether measurements are taken assembled, unloaded and at a specified temperature.
Thickness plus grammage—then performance
A 4 mm nominal sheet can be made at several weights and flute geometries. Specify allowed thickness and gsm ranges, but approve the finished box with the load case that matters. Openings, scores, welded or riveted seams, hand holes, base construction and flute direction can dominate performance even when the sheet certificate is identical.
Food-contact wording buyers can defend
For US applications, 21 CFR 177.1520 addresses listed olefin polymers, including polypropylene, subject to its specifications and conditions. That does not make every colored or converted PP box automatically compliant. Request the resin and additive declarations, migration or compliance evidence appropriate to the intended food and conditions of use, and the destination-market statement for the finished material.
How to specify vents and drains
Use a dimensioned drawing. State hole or slot size, count, center-to-edge distance and position on each panel. If cooling matters, define the pack and cooling protocol. If drainage matters, define coolant quantity, allowed retained water and drain time. Test product containment and stacking at the same time: removing material for airflow can weaken panels, scores or corners.
Application-specific validation
- Dimension and assembly: check unloaded dimensions, squareness, locks, lids and compatibility with line equipment.
- Static and compression load: test the finished box and pallet at the planned orientation, dwell and environment.
- Cooling and drainage: measure airflow/cooling or water release with the actual product arrangement.
- Handling: reproduce lifts, drops, conveyor contact, forklift interaction and pallet transfer relevant to the route.
- Print and traceability: verify color, adhesion/scuff, barcode readability and lot marking after handling and cleaning.
- Reuse loop: wash, dry, inspect and repeat under the actual cleaning chemistry, temperature and loss controls.
Cost-per-trip inputs
Record purchase price, tooling, inland and ocean freight, assembly labor, wash/dry cost, return freight, storage cube, damage, lost boxes and removal-from-service rate. Run conservative, expected and optimistic trip cases. A supplier’s theoretical cycle life is not the same as completed commercial trips.
Frequently asked questions
Is 4 mm the standard thickness for produce boxes?
It is common for many hand-held produce and seafood formats, but the correct construction depends on box size, gsm, flute, load, openings, pallet height, temperature, handling and whether the box is one-way or reusable.
Should the flute run vertically?
Vertical flute direction can help wall compression in some designs, but folds, joints, base construction and openings change the result. Mark direction on each panel in the drawing and test the complete design.
What information is needed for a container-loading plan?
Finished or flat-pack dimensions, bundles, pallet rule, maximum stack height and weight, container type, assembly method at destination and whether other packaging components share the load.
Turn your load case into a box drawing
Send internal dimensions, product and ice weight, route, pallet size, vents/drains, print and annual volume. Fuxing can prepare a plant-specific sample and quotation.
