Plantain Boxes in Bulk: A Buyer's Guide to 50 lb Export Plantain Cartons, Liners, Cold Chain and Container Loading

Fuxing Development Group · Updated October 3, 2026 · For plantain exporters and packers in Ecuador, Colombia, Guatemala, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic, and for U.S. importers and wholesalers who buy plantain cartons
Quick answer: A plantain box is a two-piece telescopic corrugated carton with vent and hand holes and a polyethylene liner bag, packed with loose green plantain fingers. The U.S. trade unit is the 50 lb carton (about 22.7 kg net): USDA terminal market reports quote plantains in 50 lb cartons and bananas in 40 lb cartons, and Ecuadorian exporters put 55–65 fingers in each box at about 53 lb gross. Exporters load 960 boxes (20 pallets × 48) or 1,080 boxes (20 pallets × 54) per 40 ft reefer. Green plantains travel at 8–12 °C and 90–95 % relative humidity, so when you buy plantain boxes in bulk, specify the net weight, inside dimensions, board construction, the BCT target for your stacking height and humidity, vent pattern, liner bag and print.

What a plantain box is, and how it differs from a banana box

Plantain cartons come from the banana trade. The construction is the same idea: a base that carries the load, a telescoping lid that slides over it, vent holes and hand holes cut through both, and a plastic liner between the fruit and the board. The GDV Transport Information Service describes banana cartons as folding telescope cartons of perforated corrugated board, with a single-wall lid, a double-wall base and perforated polyethylene bags as liners.

What changes is the weight. In the USDA Boston terminal market report of October 1, 2026, bananas are quoted in 40 lb cartons and plantains in 50 lb cartons; the Miami report of July 3, 2025 uses the same units. A plantain carton therefore carries roughly a quarter more fruit than a banana carton, usually as loose fingers rather than hands, and it does so at 90–95 % relative humidity for the whole voyage. That is the reason a plantain box should be ordered to its own specification. If you already buy banana cartons, our banana carton guide covers the shared construction in more detail.

Plantain box formats by market

The 50 lb carton dominates trade into the United States, but it is not the only pack in circulation. The table lists only formats we found in a published source, and names the source type for each.

The Ecuadorian, Japanese and FAO rows each rest on one or two commercial or case-study sources, not on a standard. We could not verify a 40 lb plantain carton in any published source, so it is not listed; if your buyer asks for one, treat it as a custom size.

Cold chain: temperature, humidity and what they do to the carton

Plantain peel is very sensitive to mechanical damage and to cold. The published guidance is consistent on the range and differs on the exact set point.

For the carton buyer, three things follow. First, the board spends days or weeks at high humidity, so strength has to be specified for those conditions. Second, the vent holes in the lid and base must line up when the box is closed and when boxes are stacked, or the cold air does not reach the fruit. Third, the liner decides how the fruit breathes: the banana trade separates perforated bags such as polypack (described in one patent as 0.7 mil polyethylene with punched holes) from unperforated banavac-type bags (1.0–1.5 mil), which are used when green life has to be extended. Liner options are on our banana bags page.

Pallet and 40 ft reefer loading

Ecuadorian plantain exporters publish two palletised loads for 50 lb boxes. Both use 20 pallets in a 40 ft reefer; the difference is six boxes per pallet.

Box and pallet counts are the exporters' own figures. The tonnages are our arithmetic (boxes × 22.68 kg) and exclude cartons, liners and pallets; at the 53 lb gross weight one exporter states, the boxes alone weigh about 23.1 t and 26.0 t.

What Fuxing supplies for plantain packers

Fuxing Group is a packaging manufacturer with plants in Dongguan (China), Hai Phong (Vietnam) and Davao and Calamba (Philippines): 170,000 m² of plant area across the group and about 1,000 staff. For plantain programmes we make three things:

All are made to your drawing or sample, and we send samples before a bulk order. Our certifications are ISO 9001, ISO 14001, FSC and GMI, with SGS verification, and we reply to quotation requests within 12 hours. What we will not do is quote a price, a minimum quantity, a delivery date or a compression figure on this page: they depend on the dimensions, board, print and quantity in your RFQ. Our carton experience is in bananas; we do not grow, pack or trade plantains, and the weights, temperatures and trade figures above come from the published sources listed below, not from our own trials. Sea freight from Asia to Latin American packers is a real cost and lead-time item, so ask us for a landed quotation and compare it with your local supplier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard plantain box size for the U.S. market?
The U.S. trade unit is the 50 lb carton, about 22.7 kg net. USDA terminal market reports in Boston (October 1, 2026) and Miami (July 3, 2025) quote green and yellow plantains from Colombia and Guatemala in 50 lb cartons, while bananas in the same reports are quoted in 40 lb cartons. Ecuadorian exporters describe the same pack as 50 lb or 22.67 kg net and about 53 lb gross, holding roughly 55 to 65 fingers. There is no single standard for the inside dimensions, so give them to your carton supplier or send a sample box.
How many plantain boxes fit in a 40 ft reefer container?
Ecuadorian exporters publish two palletised loads for 50 lb boxes in a 40 ft reefer: 960 boxes (20 pallets of 48 boxes) and 1,080 boxes (20 pallets of 54 boxes). That is about 21.8 tonnes and 24.5 tonnes of fruit net. These are exporters' own figures, not a standard; the heavier load can exceed the road weight limit at some destinations, so confirm the plan with your forwarder and receiver.
What temperature and humidity do green plantains need in transit?
UC Davis recommends 7.2 to 10 °C (45 to 50 °F) for up to 7 days and 10 to 12 °C (50 to 54 °F) for longer periods, at 90 to 95 % relative humidity. Chilling injury follows exposure to 7.2 °C or below for 7 or more days. Cargo Handbook gives 10 °C for green plantains, 85 to 90 % relative humidity and a storage life of about 5 weeks. High humidity is why the carton board has to be specified for wet-strength performance, not only for dry strength.
What is the difference between a plantain box and a banana box?
Both are two-piece telescopic corrugated cartons with vent and hand holes and a plastic liner. The main difference is weight: U.S. markets quote bananas in 40 lb cartons, about 18 kg, and plantains in 50 lb cartons, about 22.7 kg. Plantains are also normally packed as loose fingers, 55 to 65 per box according to Ecuadorian exporters, rather than as hands or clusters. The heavier fill means the plantain carton needs its own board specification and compression target; do not assume a banana carton specification will carry it.
What liner bag goes inside a plantain carton?
Exporters use a polyethylene liner between the fruit and the board. The banana trade distinguishes perforated bags such as polypack, which do not control the atmosphere, from unperforated banavac-type bags, which are evacuated and used when longer green life is needed. One Ecuadorian plantain exporter describes vacuum-packed plastic bags inside corrugated cartons. State the bag type, film thickness, dimensions and perforation pattern in your enquiry, because the liner and the carton vent pattern have to work together.
What should I send a supplier to get a quote for plantain boxes in bulk?
Send the net weight per box, the inside length, width and height of the base or a sample box, the carton style, board construction and the BCT target for your stacking height and humidity, the vent and hand hole drawing, print colours and artwork, liner bag specification, pallet size and boxes per pallet, quantity per order and per year, destination port and Incoterm, and the certificates you need. Ask for a written specification sheet and physical samples before ordering.
