What buyers mean by “waxed seafood box”
The term may refer to curtain-coated, impregnated or otherwise moisture-resistant corrugated fiberboard. These constructions do not perform identically. Ask the converter to identify the board combination, coating system, application weight, seams, liner, vent/drain design and the wet-strength or compression test used for approval.

Start with the route, not the material
One-way export
For a one-way shipment, compare total packed cost and destination disposal. Include liners, absorbent pads, coolant, secondary containment, pallet wrap and freight cube. A reusable-looking box is not an economic reuse package if there is no return path.
Closed or managed loop
For a controlled loop, model realistic trips and losses. Record wash method, drying, inspection, collapsed return ratio, backhaul cost and the point at which a box is removed from service.
Top ice or heavy condensation
Confirm wet stacking strength, seam security and drainage. Drain holes must release meltwater without allowing product loss or weakening the pallet. Test the lower layers of a full pallet, not only a single box.
How to compare cost per successful shipment
Unit price alone hides failure and return costs. Use:
(purchase + liner/coolant + packing labor + damage + disposal or return/cleaning – recovery value) ÷ successful trips.
For a one-way box, successful trips usually equal one. For a reusable tote, apply a conservative trip count supported by route data and include loss rate. Run sensitivity cases instead of quoting one optimistic figure.

Frequently asked questions
Are all waxed seafood boxes non-recyclable?
No blanket statement is reliable. Coating systems and local mill/collection acceptance vary. Ask the supplier for the exact treatment and ask the destination recovery program whether it accepts that construction.
Can PP corrugated boxes be insulated?
The PP shell itself provides limited insulation. For temperature control, the system may add an insulated liner, pad or separate thermal component. Validate the complete package against the required temperature profile.
