Why wet-pack shippers use waxed boxes at all
Ordinary corrugated cardboard loses most of its stacking strength when it gets wet. For crops that ship with top ice (broccoli, sweet corn), go through hydrocooling (celery, leafy greens), or travel with melting ice and brine (fresh seafood), the industry's traditional fix has been to impregnate or coat the corrugated with wax. The wax keeps the fiber dry enough to survive the trip — but it creates two structural problems that buyers pay for on every load.
- Single use. A waxed box makes one trip. Every load means buying the box again.
- End-of-life cost. The same wax that repels water blocks OCC recycling. Most U.S. recovery programs refuse waxed corrugated, so it is landfilled — and receivers in many regions pay disposal surcharges for it, then have no offsetting recycling revenue.

The per-trip math
The comparison that matters is cost per delivered trip, not price per box. The structure of the calculation:
- Waxed box: unit price + disposal fee, every single trip.
- PP box: (unit price ÷ number of trips) + return freight share + washing, minus end-of-life scrap value.
With a PP box priced at 2–4× a waxed box and achieving 5–10 trips, the reusable box's per-trip cost typically drops below the waxed box's from the second or third trip onward — before counting the disposal fees it eliminates. One-way lanes with no return logistics change the math; closed loops between a grower and a repeat receiver, or processor-internal totes, are where PP is strongest. The 2026 duty wrinkle — and the Philippine answer
In 2026 the United States finalized antidumping and countervailing duty orders on polypropylene corrugated boxes from China and Vietnam. The combined rate for China-origin boxes is approximately 146% (AD 83.64% + CVD 62.27%); Vietnam's antidumping rate is 130.58%. For U.S. buyers this at least doubled the landed cost of Chinese and Vietnamese PP boxes overnight.
Boxes genuinely manufactured in the Philippines are outside the scope of those orders. Our Manila (15,000 m²) and Davao (80,000 m²) plants run the same tooling, food-grade virgin PP and QC protocols as our Chinese lines, and ship with a Philippine certificate of origin and plant production records for CBP verification. Philippine origin removes the AD/CVD exposure only — the 19% U.S. reciprocal tariff and normal HTSUS duty still apply, so confirm final treatment with your customs broker. When waxed boxes still make sense
An honest manufacturer of both products should say so: waxed (or wax-alternative coated) cartons remain reasonable for strictly one-way lanes with no return path, very low-value loads, mixed retail distribution where boxes scatter across hundreds of endpoints, and programs without the discipline to recover containers.
